If I Ever Found A Giant Robot

If I ever found a giant robot, I sure hope I can figure out how to drive that thing!

It would be a big waste if in the process of pushing a few buttons, pulling some levers or probably flicking a few switches, I either destroy the town I am in, or inadvertently activate the self-destruct mechanism!

Deathbattle: Optimus vs. Gundam

A few years ago, I made a post about the differences between a Transformer and a Gundam (Gundam and Transformers: A look at two robots). It’s not bad, and I still find satisfaction seeing people view that post.

When ScrewAttack’s Deathbattle made a video on pitting two iconic Transformers and Gundam, however, I was excited. Which of the two giant robots would be better at beating each other to dust? Which would rise victorious, and leave the other a heaping pile of scrapmetal?

Well, if you haven’t watched it yet, and you are interested in the two franchises, I suggest you give that video a look.

As for the results? Well, let’s just say that I was surprised at the outcome, and I bet on the one that got obliterated. Although I agree that the points are valid, and I now agree with the outcome.

The deathbattle also pointed out an additional difference between a Gundam and a Transformer – Transformers are old and ancient. Gundams are relatively new in their series – specially the RX-78-2, which in its series was fresh off the assembly line.

Gundam and Transformers: A look at two robots

A lot of people mistake Gundams for Transformers.

I don’t blame them, there are a lot of similarities between the two, but the difference is also huge.

Artificial Intelligence.  Transformers are sentient beings.  They are another alien race of their own, with mechanical bodies and they came from a different planet.  Gundams are mobile suits.  Well, that term does not really help much, but by the term “suit” – it means that people “wear” them, right? But in the case of Gundams – people pilot them.  My vague memory of the Transformers series tell me that while people can ride the Transformers in vehicle mode, in robot mode, no human are within the robot itself.

More than meets the eye. Who doesn’t remember the theme song of the Transformers series? The Transformers, as the name so subtly suggest, are robots that can transform into something else. The Autobots transform to more civil-themed vehicles, while the Decepticons are more war-like. Now, here is where some people get confused, because some Gundams do transform.  The original Gundam had the mobile suit transform from a fighter plane (Core Fighter) as various parts of the mecha are sent to it. There are some Gundam models, such as Kyrios from Gundam 00 which has the ability to transform to a fighter plane. To the uninitiated to the Gundam franchise, I wouldn’t be surprised if they view this as a “transformer” ability and mistake the robot as another series.

Made in Japan.  The original Transformers animation, though it is owned by an American Company, was animated in Japan.  I made the mistake to think of it as a “Japanese Anime” because of the animation style.  It was only a few years ago that I found out that the Transformers franchise is actually American, but was actually animated in Japan. Gundam is 100% made in Japan. Well, at least that is what I know. Unless they ship off some of  the animation to some sweatshop that colors or performs some minor animation outsourcing (which I highly doubt).

Now, why the confusion? Well, thanks to the revival of the Transformers and the movies made by Hollywood, Transformers has become more of a popular culture than Gundam.  Although it is tiring for me to sometimes point out that a certain mecha show that I am watching is not Transformers, I try.  Although at times, I just simply state that it is not Transformers, but Gundam.

I know that there are a lot of similarities and differences between these two animation franchise, but from my perspective, these are the things that I find most notable.  What about you? Do you have anything to add?

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day. If you want to support me, here are some ways:

If you were Kira, you’d hate yourself, too

If you were living in a foreign country during peace times, grew up there, gained lots of friends, then war suddenly breaks out between your native country and the country you are in now, how would you react?

You have friends there, yet they are fighting against your kinsmen.  You don’t want to lose your friends,  yet you’d be a traitor to your own kind.

Toss in the fact that you suddenly found yourself in battle with your best friend before you moved away – if that does not screw with your head, I don’t know what…

Before anything else, this post was written halfway through Gundam SEED.  I hope I don’t spoil anything for you, and I also hope no comments will spoil me. Continue reading “If you were Kira, you’d hate yourself, too”

Gundam SEED: Initial Impressions

I was not able to watch Gundam Seed before, and despite the warnings that I got regarding the show, I still opted to watch – probably due to the mechs.

When I saw the first episode, I could not help but think of the high parallelism between the show and the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Continue reading “Gundam SEED: Initial Impressions”

Everything’s Cooler with a Deathscythe

I managed to finish building my Gundam Deathscythe model kit during the holiday vacation.  I know it is far from what the pros do with all the painting and detailing, and I know that there are a few imperfections with it, but I am happy with it.  😀 Being able to finish and make awesome poses and photos with it is fun enough for me.

Deathscythe Fun

I managed to obtain the Gundam Deathscythe 1/100 HG model today.  Although I was not yet able to completely assemble the unit, heck I only managed to build these few parts for I was already tired and sleepy when I began building.

Though if it were up to me, and not the time, I would have finished, or tried to finish everything in one go.

However, since I began with the weapons – to give myself a feeling of accomplishment, I tried to use it as a prop for my existing Gyan 1/160 scale model – which is from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

Here are a few shots taken: Continue reading “Deathscythe Fun”

Gundam Wing 37 – Confusing Suits

Probably one of the confusing aspects of Gundam Wing is how the pilots are able to quickly jump from one suit to another.

I have been used to seeing Heero in the Gundam Wing.  So far, he has transferred to a lot of suits already… Continue reading “Gundam Wing 37 – Confusing Suits”

Gundam Wing 32 – Who needs Meth, when you have Gundam

Gundam Wing Zero’s system has mind-altering abilities – reminds me of some drugs which affects your head.

I looked up methamphetamine and found a few similarities to piloting the Wing Zero.
