How To Make a WordPress Page

Today, I will be showing you how to make a wordpress page. It’s easy and a good way to organize information on your blog.

First off, what is a page? Pages are a way to organize information on a website. Think of it as a folder that holds things inside. So, if you want to separate your contact information, for example, you can create a page for that, and call it the “Contacts” page. How about an easily accessible section to show information about yourself? You can make an “About Me” page. How about a section to show off all the photos of your cats? You can do that, too, if you want.

Why not make it a blog post? It’s easier, right?

You can do that. But blog posts gets buried in more current information as time goes by. Some blog posts can be “pinned” at the very top, and that might meet your requirements. But personally, I prefer pages as a cleaner way of grouping or classifying things on a website or blog.

Let’s get down to business

My Pages Section

This is my Pages section. You can find the pages under My Site -> Site -> Pages.

If you have not created any pages yet, it should be blank, except for the main page where your blog posts are located. I am rusty with what the default pages a new wordpress blog contains, but if I remember it correctly, it should have a “Contacts” and an “About” page as default.

Let’s say you want to make a new page… How about a page to showcase your new self-published book? Let’s do that.

Click Add New Page

It should open up a screen similar to making a blog post.

This is a new page, not a new blog post. The similarity is striking, I know.

What you are actually doing is composing a new Blog Page, not a Blog Post. Type in whatever you want.

Please ignore my fancy synopsis. It is just a draft. 🙂

Once you have written up your page’s content, it is time to publish it. However, before you hit that “Publish” button, there is one important thing you need to take a look at first. The Page Attributes.

What this does is to simply tell wordpress the level your page is. Is it a main or top level page, or is it a bottom, or sub-level page (a page under another page).

This is a top level page, which means that it is a main page of your blog.

This would make your page a Sub Level. If I select to say, place the page under the About Me section, it will be visible under the About Me. This is called “nesting”

Once that is done, you can just hit publish and your page is completed.

Is it done?

Yes. Probably. Depending on your WordPress Theme, pages can either be automatically displayed, or you would have to manually enable them. It can be a whole new different can of worms, most specially since it would involve tweaking with your page’s theme appearance.

Most themes are user friendly, and all you have to do is just fill in the blanks. There is not much fancy coding or confusing computer mumbo-jumbo that you have to work on. However, each theme has it’s own setting for displaying the pages.

For example, as of the date I am publishing this post, I am using the Twenty Sixteen Theme, and it displays pages under a menu. I would have to customize my theme (under Design), go in the Menu, and pick the pages I would want to show in there.

In Conclusion

Pages are a neat way of highlighting important information on your blog, and if properly implemented and organized, it can transform your blog from a simple journal, to a more comprehensive website.

WordPress is not just a blogging tool, you know? It is also a website developing tool.
